Aerosol Optical Depth and Aerosol Speciation

Aerosol parameters are retrieved with the new method SYNAER [SYNergetic Aerosol Retrieval; Holzer-Popp et al., 2000, 2002a, 2002b] from a combination of simultaneous AATSR and SCIAMACHY measurements. The high spectral resolution of SCIAMACHY ideally supplements the high spatial resolution of AATSR. A detailed description of the SYNAER methodology can be found here.

The SYNAER method offers the possibility to generate a 25-year-long aerosol record by constantly applying the same method since equivalent measurement devices to SCIAMACHY/AATSR (on ENVISAT) have been in orbit since 1995 (GOME/ATSR) and will be in orbit on the METOP satellite series up to 2020.

Daily European maps of aerosol optical thickness and type are available on a near-real-time basis; global maps will be produced offline.
