MIPAS Data Sheet

By means of limb sounding of infrared emissions, the MIPAS interferometer will measure profiles of over 20 trace gases globally day and night between the upper troposphere and the lower thermosphere. MIPAS is an ESA instrument originally proposed by IMK (Karlsruhe, Germany).

Specifications Vertical scan range / resolution: 6- 68 km (150 km offline) / 3 km
  Horizontal resolution: 500 x 500 km
  Spectral range / resolution: 4.15 - 14.6 µm / 0.035 cm-1 (unapodized)
  Radiometric precision: 2%
  Interferometer scan time: 4 sec
Mission objectives Stratospheric chemistry:
global ozone and polar stratospheric chemistry, e.g., O3, NO, NO2, HNO3, HNO4, N2O5, ClONO2, ClO, HOCl, PSCs
  Climate research:
global distribution of trace gases and clouds relevant for the climate, e.g., O3, CH4, H2O, N2O, CFCs, OCS, p, T, aerosols, cirrus.
  Dynamics:
stratospheric transport processes; troposphere-stratosphere exchange of O3, CH4, N2O, CFCs, SF6.
  Tropospheric chemistry:
H2O, CH4, O3, HNO3, NO, PAN, aerosol, OCS, HCN in the upper troposphere.
