The atmosphere is changing and the potential consequences for the "System Earth" are manifold. Dynamics, chemistry, and radiation determine its state and because all are coupled with each other via various mechanisms it is often difficult to identify a direct link between causes and consequences. A better understanding of this system requires integral, continuous, precise, long term and global observations. In order to contribute to this effort of improved understanding, the World Data Center for Remote Sensing of the Atmosphere (WDC-RSAT) was established. ... more

Dynamic Activity Index (DAI)

Latest information on the Dynamic Activity Index (DAI) based on OMI data: The analysis of the DAI is performed to observe large-scale dynamcis in the stratosphere. It is calculated from daily amplitudes of the planetary wave number 1 for the southern and northern hemisphere based on total column ozone satellite measurements. Only the wind regime during winter season allows for propagation of planetary waves into the stratosphere. This then leads to an overall increase of the DAI that's interrupted only during events of stratospheric warming. Low-scale modulations are due to the cycle duration of the planetary waves.
